THE INEQUALITY OF SCHOOL
During our time in primary and secondary school in some occasions teachers did not pay attention to the diversity of the class, and they acted and taught like if all students were equal, generally, for so some students had difficulties in learning different things because they did not have the attentions they need.
During our time in primary and secondary school in some occasions teachers did not pay attention to the diversity of the class, and they acted and taught like if all students were equal, generally, for so some students had difficulties in learning different things because they did not have the attentions they need.
One example of this problem was in P.E. class, we had to run through the
beach 1h and if one of us stopped to have a rest or to drink water we “fail”
the activity and we got less mark than other students that had more resistance
or more ability to run. For asthmatic people, this was very unfair, because
they could not last all that time running and most of time they used to walk,
for them it was very difficult and they had to overcharge themselves only to
get a low qualification.
Other problem was in mathematics class we had to do a lot of homework in
our home. If we did not do these exercises because we did not know how to do
them or our parents could not help us, the next day teachers nagged us. With
that fact a gap appeared between the students, part of them knew how to do the
activities and they advance, but the other part were stuck and for so they
ended behind the class.
Also it happened in artistic class when we did a colour wheel to study the
different tonalities of the colours, colour blinded people used to get a bad
mark because they did not put the colours correctly. Due to that, meanwhile is
happening the same thing that before, there is also a deprivation of the
artistic abilities. That situation could be treated in a different way in which
the other students could see the effect of this illness in art, and how these
kids deal with it and the way they see the world.
For kids that had illnesses like dyslexia not only was difficult one or two
lessons, for them all subjects were a problem because teachers used to impart
the class in ways that not all students followed, and they got lost and the
teacher did not care about it. There was not any kind of reinforcement for
these kids and at the end they did not understand nothing.
These are some problems that we saw in our schools,
but they are not the only ones, there are lots of them and we are not paying
attention, and these kids are getting lost and have very difficult the
opportunity to study. As future teachers we have to change that and help them.
Thank you for your understanding.
